⚠️ Important Notice: Canadian Law & Content Policy

fanfiction.lol is hosted in Canada and operates under Canadian law. Please review our Content Policy, Terms of Service, and Privacy Policy before signing up.

Key restrictions under Canadian law:

  • Explicit sexual content involving minors is strictly prohibited
  • Content that may be interpreted as obscene under Canadian law is not allowed
  • This includes certain violent sexual horror content, even if consensual

Due to the vague but strict nature of Canadian obscenity laws, the admins will make decisions on content restrictions on a case-by-case basis. When in doubt, please contact the admin before posting.

If you primarily post underage content, violent kink, or noncon, Archive of Our Own may be a more suitable platform for your work. This is not a stance on the validity of such content, but a legal necessity for a Canadian-hosted archive.

Before you begin using fanfiction.lol, you must agree to our Terms of Service (opens in new window), including the Content Policy (opens in new window) and Privacy Policy (opens in new window).

Terms of Service

terms of service

last updated: August 02, 2026

fanfiction.lol is a small, independent archive run by one person: Brennan Kenneth Brown, a Canadian individual. by creating an account and using this site, you agree to these terms. if you don't agree, please don't use the site.

I.A. general terms

fanfiction.lol is a non-commercial personal project. it does not charge fees, carry advertising, or generate revenue. it is provided as-is, without warranties of any kind — express, implied, or statutory. the site may go down, be slow, lose data, or change. every reasonable effort is made to prevent this, but no uptime or data preservation guarantee is offered.

to the maximum extent permitted by Canadian law, the operator of fanfiction.lol is not liable for any indirect, incidental, consequential, special, or punitive damages arising from your use of the service, content posted by other users, or any interruption or discontinuation of service. because this is a free, non-commercial service, total liability to you for any claim is limited to zero dollars ($0 CAD). nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, gross negligence, or matters that cannot be excluded under applicable Canadian law.

these terms are governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of Canada. by using this site you consent to Canadian jurisdiction for any disputes arising from your use of the service.

I.B. updates to these terms

these terms may change. the date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. continuing to use fanfiction.lol after an update is published constitutes your acceptance of the revised terms. for significant changes, notice will be given via the site's news feed or an on-screen prompt at next login.

I.C. no guarantee of availability

fanfiction.lol may be unavailable at times due to maintenance, technical issues, or circumstances outside our control. reasonable efforts will be made to restore service promptly, but no specific uptime is guaranteed. the operator also reserves the right to discontinue the service entirely, with reasonable advance notice where possible.

third-party services used to operate the site — including Cloudflare (CDN and routing), SendGrid (transactional email), and Umami (analytics) — may experience their own outages or policy changes. the operator is not responsible for disruptions caused by these services.

I.D. content you access

fanfiction.lol hosts user-submitted creative works that may include mature, explicit, dark, or otherwise challenging content. the archive's ratings and warning system exists to help you navigate this. by using the site you acknowledge that you may encounter content you find disturbing, offensive, or upsetting.

fanfiction.lol does not pre-screen content before publication. the operator is not responsible for the content of individual user works and does not endorse any views expressed in them. if you encounter content that violates these terms, please use the report function.

I.E. what we do with your content

you retain full ownership of everything you post. by posting content to fanfiction.lol, you grant the operator a limited, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, display, and serve your content to other users as part of normal site operation. this licence ends when you delete the content or close your account.

your content will not be sold or licensed to third parties, used to train generative AI or machine learning models, monetised, or used for any purpose beyond operating this site. this is a permanent commitment.

I.F. what you can't do

by using fanfiction.lol you agree not to:

  • — post content constituting child pornography under s.163.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada. this includes written depictions of sexual activity involving persons under 18 where such depiction is the dominant characteristic of the material — not just photographic or video material
  • — post content that publicly incites or wilfully promotes hatred against an identifiable group, contrary to ss.318–319 of the Criminal Code of Canada
  • — harass, threaten, stalk, or dox other users or real people
  • — post content generated by large language models (LLMs) or generative AI tools
  • — use the site for commercial promotion, solicitation, or advertising
  • — infringe the copyright, trademark, or intellectual property rights of others
  • — impersonate any person, entity, or organisation
  • — attempt to compromise the technical security or integrity of the site
  • — create multiple accounts to evade bans, suspensions, or other moderation actions
  • — share another person's private identifying information without their consent (doxxing)

I.G. registration and accounts

to create an account you must provide a valid email address and agree to these terms. you agree to provide accurate information and keep your account details current.

you are responsible for the security of your account and password. the operator is not liable for loss resulting from unauthorised access due to your failure to keep credentials secure. if you believe your account has been compromised, change your password immediately and contact [email protected].

accounts are non-transferable.

I.H. age policy

you must be 13 years of age or older to use fanfiction.lol. by creating an account, you represent that you are at least 13.

explicit content (rated "Explicit") is restricted to users who confirm in their account settings that they are 18 or older. misrepresenting your age to access explicit content violates these terms and may result in account termination.

fanfiction.lol does not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. if the operator becomes aware that an account belongs to someone under 13, it will be deleted.

I.I. enforcement

violations of these terms or the content policy may result in content removal, account suspension, or permanent account termination depending on the severity and nature of the violation. the operator has sole discretion over enforcement decisions.

certain violations will result in immediate permanent termination with no warning:

  • — posting any content constituting child pornography under s.163.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada (including written material)
  • — doxxing a real person in a manner intended to facilitate harassment or harm
  • — sustained targeted harassment of a specific user or real person

where legally required, serious violations will be reported to the appropriate Canadian law enforcement authorities.

you may close your account at any time via Account Settings → Delete My Account. see the privacy policy for what happens to your data upon deletion.

Content Policy

content policy

this policy applies to all content on fanfiction.lol: works, comments, bookmarks, collections, and profiles. content is not pre-screened before publication. if you believe content violates this policy, please report it.

II.A. creative expression

fanfiction.lol will not remove content solely because it is dark, offensive, morally complex, or upsetting to some readers. fiction explores difficult human experiences.

content involving violence, trauma, moral ambiguity, and transgressive themes is permitted, provided it complies with the rest of this policy. the ratings and warnings system manages what audiences encounter; it is not a basis for restricting what gets written.

II.B. what you can post

fanfiction.lol welcomes:

  • — fan fiction in any fandom, including crossovers, alternate universes, and experimental formats
  • — original fiction, poetry, and creative non-fiction
  • — multimedia fanworks (podfic descriptions, fanart descriptions, etc.)
  • — explicit and mature content, rated appropriately
  • — real person fiction (RPF/RPS), clearly tagged
  • — works exploring dark, difficult, or controversial themes

all works must be human-created. content generated by large language models (LLMs) or generative AI tools is not permitted (see section II.K).

II.C. commercial promotion

fanfiction.lol is a non-commercial space. the following are not permitted:

  • — advertising or promoting commercial products, services, or businesses
  • — soliciting commissions, payment, or patronage for works hosted on this site
  • — embedding affiliate links, referral codes, or other monetisation mechanisms in works or profiles

linking to your personal website or other social spaces in your profile is fine. the restriction is on commercial solicitation tied to works hosted here.

II.D. copyright

fanfiction.lol operates under Canadian copyright law, which provides for fair dealing (Copyright Act, ss.29–29.2) for purposes including research, private study, education, parody, satire, criticism, and review. transformative fanworks are generally consistent with these principles.

the following are not permitted:

  • — reproducing large verbatim excerpts of a copyrighted work (novels, song lyrics, screenplays, etc.) without authorisation
  • — uploading, translating, or podficcing someone else's work — fanwork or professionally published — without their permission. crediting the original creator does not substitute for permission

the mere existence of transformative fanworks based on copyrighted properties will not be acted upon. for formal copyright complaints, see the takedown policy.

II.E. plagiarism

plagiarism is posting someone else's creative expression as your own, without attribution. minor changes — replacing names, swapping synonyms, rearranging sentences — are not sufficient to make a work yours.

plagiarism is not permitted. this includes reposting another creator's work without permission and presenting AI-generated text as original human writing.

II.F. personal information and identity

you may not post content that reveals non-public identifying information about a real person without their consent, including:

  • — linking someone's fan identity (username, pseud) to their legal or professional identity
  • — sharing contact details, addresses, phone numbers, or other locating information
  • — revealing the identity of the creator of an orphaned work
  • — disclosing medical, financial, or other sensitive personal data

real-person fiction is permitted. using it as a vehicle to expose or weaponise private information is not.

II.G. impersonation

you may not impersonate another person, public figure, or organisation in a way intended to mislead others. this includes creating accounts or profiles designed to appear as another real person or entity.

fiction clearly marked as fiction is not impersonation.

II.H. harassment

harassment is behaviour that creates a hostile environment for a specific person. it is not permitted. examples include:

  • — sustained personal attacks, threats, or intimidation directed at a specific person
  • — coordinating or encouraging others to target or harm a specific user
  • — content whose primary purpose is to harm or humiliate a specific real individual outside of fiction
  • — gifting hostile or unwanted content to a real person who has indicated they do not consent
  • — content that advocates specific, real, harmful actions against real people

real-person fiction is not inherently harassment. dark or negative portrayals in clearly fictional contexts are generally permitted. using RPF as a targeted harassment tool — in ways designed to intimidate the subject — is not.

users are encouraged to use blocking, muting, and filtering tools to manage their own experience.

II.I. avatars and profile images

profile images must be appropriate for general audiences. they must not depict:

  • — genital nudity or graphic sexual activity
  • — hate symbols or imagery that promotes harm against a group
  • — real photographs of identifiable individuals used without consent in a harmful context

II.J. ratings and archive warnings

the ratings and warnings system helps readers make informed choices. please use it honestly.

ratings:

  • General Audiences — suitable for all readers
  • Teen And Up — some content not suitable for young children
  • Mature — violence, sexuality, strong language
  • Explicit — graphic sexual content
  • Not Rated — undecided

required archive warnings — apply all that are relevant, or choose "Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings":

  • — Rape/Non-Con
  • — Graphic Depictions of Violence
  • — Major Character Death
  • — Real Person Fiction (RPF)
  • — Racism
  • — Queerphobia
  • — Ableism
  • — Colonialism
  • — Systemic Oppression

"Creator Chose Not To Use Archive Warnings" signals the work may contain any warning-level content. it is a valid choice — not a workaround. using it in bad faith to avoid tagging content you know should be warned is a violation of this policy.

use additional tags generously. readers use them to find what they're looking for and to avoid what they're not. good tagging is a gift to your readers.

administrators may correct, add to, or require correction of inaccurate tags. works with seriously misleading tags may be hidden.

II.K. illegal and prohibited content

child sexual abuse material and written child pornography: this is the site's absolute prohibition. section 163.1 of the Criminal Code of Canada defines child pornography broadly. it includes not only photographic or video material but also written material that describes or advocates sexual activity involving a person under 18, where this is the dominant characteristic of the material. written fiction can constitute a criminal offence under Canadian law. any such content will result in immediate account termination and, where legally required, reporting to Canadian law enforcement. there are no exceptions.

hate content: content that publicly incites or wilfully promotes hatred against an identifiable group (ss.318–319 of the Criminal Code) is prohibited. this includes hatred on the basis of race, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability, and other protected characteristics. fiction that critically explores these themes is distinct from content designed to incite real-world hatred.

additionally prohibited:

  • — malware, executable files, or content intended to compromise users' devices or data
  • — spam: repeated identical or near-identical posts across multiple locations
  • — content generated by LLMs or generative AI tools
  • — trade secrets, classified information, or content that otherwise violates third-party legal rights

Cloudflare (CDN and security): all traffic passes through Cloudflare's network, which may log request metadata (IP address, path, response codes). Cloudflare's infrastructure is located outside Canada. see Cloudflare privacy policy.

server host: the site runs on a privately managed server. server-level access logs are retained for up to 30 days.

note on cross-border transfers: Resend and Cloudflare are US-based services. your email address and IP address may be processed in the United States. these transfers are subject to each service's privacy policy and applicable data transfer safeguards. by using fanfiction.lol, you acknowledge this.

your content will not be shared with, sold to, or used to train AI or machine learning systems of any kind.
