“Hey, Coo! Coo!”
The high-pitched rambunctious exclamations were enough to drag Coo out from his slumber with a startled hoot, his feathers puffed out enough to graze the walls of the tree hollow he sat in. They slowly lowered, though, as Coo’s brain caught up to the sight before him on one of the tree’s boughs: Kirby, with eyes big enough to hold the Moon.
“Dear...” Coo started, letting out a yawn, “you really oughtn’t wake someone up like that.”
“Sorry,” Kirby said, just like they had the previous times (and would continue to do so for the future times). “It’s really cold tonight! Can you scootch over?”
Coo did just that as he lifted a wing, giving Kirby enough wiggle room to squeeze theirself in and lie down in a loaf. With a little yawn of their own, Kirby’s eyes closed and they were instantly off to dreamland.
Coo rested his wing onto Kirby with a weary (but affectionate) sigh. “If only I could fall asleep that fast...” Coo mumbled as he closed his own eyes and settled in for a cozy (and warm) slumber.
