About Linked Data:
Linked Data is a broad field of research and development that aims to make digital information more structured, interlinked and meaningful (or "semantic") — to computers but also to humans. This can for instance enable more personal and insightful search engine results, insights into complex data sets but also new avenues for online social networking (for example, the decentralized social networking protocol ActivityPub powering federated communities uses Linked Data. NGI projects are working on the technical and infrastructural hurdles to overcome before everyone can benefit from these richer online experiences.

NGI Sargasso has spent the past years building bridges across the Atlantic to support cutting-edge digital innovation and strengthen collaboration between leading research and innovation ecosystems.

Through a series of open calls, the project supported dozens of innovative projects and researchers, enabling them to collaborate internationally and advance technologies aligned with the European vision of a human-centric, trustworthy, and open internet.

From AI and data sovereignty to blockchain, cybersecurity, digital identity, and privacy-enhancing technologies, NGI Sargasso funded and supported pioneering solutions tackling some of the most pressing challenges of our digital future.

Beyond funding, the project created a thriving innovation community by providing:
• Tailored training and mentoring for beneficiaries
• Visibility through interviews, events, and dissemination activities
• Opportunities for transatlantic partnerships and collaboration
• Policy insights to strengthen EU–US–Canada cooperation on internet technologies

Over the course of the project, NGI Sargasso connected innovators, researchers, startups, and institutions across continents, contributing to a stronger and more collaborative global ecosystem for the Next Generation Internet.

Various governments and governmental organisations in Europe are already working to provide building blocks for a sovereign public infrastructure. The newly founded European Digital Infrastructure Consortium for Digital Commons (DC-EDIC) can fuel this development. This session brings together actors involved in setting up DC-EDIC in conversation with civil society and the wider open source community. We will explore the EDIC's role in supporting the open source ecosystem, as well its connections to European policy:

• How can we support long-term sustainability for open source public infrastructure?
• What capacity barriers still stand in the way of OS adoption?
• What governance models can enable meaningful participation from stakeholders?

With this session, we hope to help steer the EU's ambitions for digital sovereignty toward models that genuinely empower the open source community and reinforce the sustainability of Digital Commons.

Validated in a live Canadian deployment, the platform shows how ethical AI, decentralized data, and human-centred design can improve outcomes and empower people living with cancer.
